About the Presenters
Anne Stone, MA, MPA
I currently serve as the statewide director of the Washington Frontiers of Innovation initiative. While I am housed at the Department of Social and Health Services, I work directly with the Department of Early Learning, Department of Health, Health Care Authority, and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Washington state agency partnership. I am relatively new to WA after spending 25 years as a private funder and system/policy consultant in Oregon around early childhood systems and child health reform. In these capacities I served on the past Governor's Early Childhood Matters Council, and the current Governor's Early Childhood Design Team, the Addictions and Mental Health Division- Children's System Advisory Council, Oregon's Teen Pregnancy Prevention Taskforce, Juvenile Justice Coordinating Council, and numerous private non-profit boards and public school elected positions. I have spent the last 10 years in workforce development efforts around primary care provider linkages to early childhood systems targeting increased standardized developmental screening, maternal depression screening and strengthened coordination and communication across sectors. In my current role I facilitate multi-dimensional dialogue around system and policy research and development opportunities, to test new ways to use brain science to achieve breakthrough outcomes for our most vulnerable children and families in a multi-generational approach. Washington State has been a FOI partner since 2011 and I was honored to join this work in October 2014.
Melissa Rivard, M.Ed.
Melissa Rivard officially joined the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University in 2015 as a Senior Project Manager on the Frontiers of Innovation initiative and works closely with the Washington Cluster. Melissa has extensive experience in the field of educational research and working with practitioners across educational levels and contexts on developing innovative approaches to putting conceptual frameworks into practice in diverse settings. Prior to joining the Center, Melissa worked at Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education on projects stemming from a longterm collaboration with early childhood educators in Reggio Emilia and using 'pedagogical documentation' as a tool to support learning for children and adults. Melissa received her undergraduate degree in visual communication from the University of Minnesota and her master's degree in individualized study from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Judy King, M.S.W.
Judy serves as the Strengthening Families Washington Administrator at the Department of Early Learning (DEL). On the Partnerships and Collaboration Division at DEL, Judy leads work to integrate strengths-based family support in early learning systems work. Key areas of focus at DEL have been policies and programming related to strengths promotion in families and communities. Judy oversees a team focused on integration of protective and promotive factors through home visiting system development, the federal Maternal Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program, the Community Based Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) Program, and the Children’s Trust Fund.
Liliana Lengua, Ph.D.
Dr. Lengua is an UW Professor of Psychology and director of the Center for Child and Family Well-being. She is a child clinical psychologist and a mother of 3 children. She is an internationally recognized expert on children’s vulnerable and resilient responses to stress, demonstrating how parenting and children’s temperament contribute to children’s unique responses to stress. She is also recognized for her research on the effects of stress and disadvantage on parenting and children’s social-emotional development, and has developed an evidence-based parenting program infused with mindfulness practices to enhance parenting effectiveness. She has been the principal investigator of several federally-funded research projects and is the author of over 80 published papers. She serves on the steering committee for the CDC funded Washington State Essentials for Childhood Initiative, collaborates with the Harvard Center for the Developing Child’s Frontiers of Innovation, and serves on the board of trustees for Neighborhood House, a private, nonprofit anti- poverty organization.
